We strive to provide a place for connection through learning. Class offerings at The Commons focus on connection, preventative health/wellness, learning, and fun.
Are you looking to share your craft, teach a skill, or gather a group regularly? We offer discounted rental rates for resident teachers and regularly meeting groups. If you are interested in helping us build healthy, connected communities, consider joining our team and email us.
If you are a student, you can help support this collaborative effort by being flexible to the variety of ways payment is collected. In most cases students pay teachers directly. See below for more information on classes, teachers, payment, etc.

Healthy Aging Iyengar Yoga for Youngsters (age 30's-60's)

What is a youngster you ask? Life is characterized by cycles and stages. A youngster is more a state of mind than an age, but this class helps those that are leaving the bodies of their 20's and 30's and planning well for the next stage of life. Or perhaps you are well into your 40's, 50's, and 60's and want to elevate or maintain your self-care game.
This is a class designed and opened for all "levels" of practitioners and is a slightly faster pace than Wednesday's Yoga for Healthy Aging (50+) class. Learn how to utilize yoga asanas (postures) to prevent common conditions and yoga philosophy for emotional health and happiness through the aging process. 1st class free, $12 drop-in, discounted 4 & 8 class passes available.

KizME Dance Lab

Want more connection, rhythm, and creativity in your life? Enter KIZOMBA, a partner dance with African roots where dancers communicate with each other nonverbally to co-create artful movement with playfulness and flow.
This 6-week progressive class series is a deep dive into core moves and techniques in Kizomba and urban kiz dance styles, focusing on building musicality, attunement, and confidence in our bodies.

Mahjong Game Night

Meeting every Tuesday night starting in February, Lisa Perk will host Mahjong Game Night @ Pettaway Commons! Mahjong is a popular Chinese tile-based game of skill, strategy, and luck, often played by four people, where the goal is to form sets (like "pongs" or "chows") to complete a 14-tile hand and declare "Mahjong". Originating in 19th-century China, it spread globally, with numerous regional variations (like American Mahjong, Japanese Riichi).

Iyengar Yoga for Healthy Aging (50+)

Life is characterized by cycles and stages. This class will focus on how to honor and celebrate an ever changing and maturing body and mind. What makes us sick or helps us heal is the combined interaction of the systems of our physical body, our emotional well-being, and our mental health.
This class will be a study of how to utilize yoga asanas (postures) to address common conditions and yoga philosophy for emotional health and happiness through the aging process. This is an all-levels class, everyone will be met where they are and provided instruction on how best to use support in the poses for optimal alignment. 1st class free, $12 drop-in, discounted 4 & 8 class passes available. Mahjong Strategy Class

Play with Intention: Table Strategy for American Mah Jongg Thursdays 10 am - 12 pm. $75/session
This 6 week session is for players who already know the basic NMJL rules and are ready to play with more confidence, strategy, and intention.

Kick off your weekend with invigorating Friday morning sun salutations! This dynamic class moves at a lively pace, with the instructor joining in the fun alongside you. Each week, we mix up the sequence of poses to warm up your body, boost your heart rate and greet the new day with reverence and gratitude.

Gentle Iyengar Yoga
(Slower Paced)

This class is a great choice for students of any level looking to build strength and focus on alignment. For those recovering from injury, experiencing unsteadiness, and/or stiffness, modifications of the poses are demonstrated with the use of props for support.
This class rotates weekly between standing and seated poses, gentle back bends, forward bends, and twists. This class is conducted at a slower pace and focuses on the use of props to build a resilient practice that supports our ever changing bodies. Supine pranayama (reclined breathing practices) are introduced. 1st class free, $12 drop-in, discounted 4 & 8 class passes available. Pay/register upon arrival or ahead of time here.
Slow Burn

3rd Fridays 6:30-7:30 pm

Grab your friends, your sexy attire (optional), and meet us every 3rd Friday to release through movement and embrace your inner diva!! This burlesque class, led by the Southern Slow-Burn Belle, Bastet Dafoe, will teach you the art of sensual movement, confidence, and creative expression.

Pran means life energy and ayama is movement of that energy through breathing exercises. This class teaches ujjayi, viloma, and kumbaka breaths as an introduction to balancing the body and mind.
Advanced Yoga: For students taking Intermediate Iyengar yoga classes and wish to dive deeper into the study and practice of Iyengar yoga. Students should have a regular practice of Sirsasana, Sarvangasana, Adho Mukha Vrksasana and Urdhva Dhanurasana and know any adaptations that they may need for these asanas. Each class will have *target poses* and a sequence appropriate for building to that asana.
Target poses for upcoming months:
Jan: Kurmasana and Tittibhasana
Feb: Adho Mukha Vrksasana, Salamba Sirsasana II, and niralamba sarvangasana
Mar: Eka pada Rajakapotasana, Eka pada Urdhva Dhanurasana, Dwipada Viparita Dandasana
Don't worry if you think you "can't" do the pose, we are learning how to work towards it!
4-wk Beginner Yoga Series

Intermediate Iyengar Yoga

This class is great for those who want to deepen their practice of standings, inversions, back bends, balancing, abdominal, and forward bending poses. Supported alternatives will be given for ailments, stiffness, and/or injury. The philosophy of yoga is weaved into each class. Sirsasana (head stand) and sarvangasana (shoulder-stand) are introduced with modifications, alternatives, and/or variations suitable to various levels offered.

2nd Sunday Teacher Practice

2nd Sundays 5:45 - 7 pm
Certified Teachers and Teachers in Training
2nd Sunday Teacher Practice. Starting Feb 8. $15
A structured and ego-less place to practice teaching. For existing certified teachers and teachers in training to practice teaching in a supportive community of teachers. De-mystify unfamiliar or difficult poses, address common issues for students, practice modifications and various prop supports. We will stick to a basic and consistent format:
- Teachers demonstrate the pose identifying no more than 3 actions per pose (the "how").
- Teachers teach and observe students and learn to offer and demonstrate corrections and modifications.
- Teachers submit pose(s) they wish to teach 1 week in advance for sequence to be assembled for class.
- Teachers choose how they would like to receive feedback (verbal or written, at the time or later, or maybe not at all!).
